Maryland Now Unfairly Suspending Driver’s License Over Unpaid Child Support

On July 28, 2023, truck driver Donte Peoples learned his license was suspended for unpaid child support while making a delivery at Grissom Air Reserve Base, despite having custody of his son and no payment obligations since 2017.

This led to his job loss, eviction, and financial hardship. Maryland Legal Aid claims the state often wrongly suspends licenses for unpaid child support due to a flawed automated system, violating due process. They are seeking legal action to prevent future incidents.

The Maryland Child Support Administration suspended about 20,512 licenses in 2023, with a disproportionate impact on Black parents. Legal Aid asserts that the state’s system fails to notify parents properly and often suspends licenses unjustly. State officials, however, maintain they comply with the law and use license suspensions as an early intervention to encourage contact with child support services.
