Maryland is one of four states that doesn’t allow beer sales at grocery stores, however Gov. Wes Moore is pushing to change that! The ban of selling beer and wine in stores was implemented in 1978 and Gov. Moore said the Maryland General Assembly will consider changing the law during the upcoming legislative session on January 8, 2025.

Gov. Wes Moore said in a statement,

“Lifting this ban puts people first and makes us more competitive. I look forward to working with our legislative partners to pass this overdue change,”

“Not only, it doesn’t make sense for Maryland to be out of step with the rest of the country, but the reality is, if people want to come and have beer and wine, one of the common threads I see and hear is people want this to happen,” “This is about listening to the people.”

Moore also made it a point to reference some conditions people have to experience to purchase beer and wine,

“If a person is choosing to go buy beer or wine, in some communities, they have to do it through bulletproof glass,”

“This is about making sure people who want to go and purchase beer and wine, should also have a chance to do it in dignity.”
