Treach on 90s Hip-Hop, Jason's Lyric & Creative Journey
Treach on 90s Hip-Hop, Creative Evolution & Jason’s Lyric Live

The 90s remain a golden era for hip-hop, and for Treach, they hold an everlasting impact on both culture and his creative path. Reflecting on the decade during a candid interview with Vic Jagger, the Naughty by Nature legend shared his deep appreciation for the artistry, energy, and influence of that time.
“The 90s were the naughty 90s,” Treach said with pride, recalling how that era helped shape the hip-hop movement. From groundbreaking tracks to iconic soundtracks for movies, Treach emphasized the vital intersection of music and storytelling. “Every movie had a soundtrack and they were fire. A combination of rap and R&B brilliance,” he shared, noting the unmatched creativity that defined those years. His favorite? “Uptown Anthem,” which continues to carry the spirit of that time.
Now bringing his passion to theater, Treach is a key part of the stage adaptation of Jason’s Lyric, a project he deeply believes in. “It’s more than a retelling of the film,” he explained. “It’s a magical musical. There’s poetry, dancing, singing, and storytelling that take audiences through the decades.” For Treach, this live experience is uniquely powerful. “It’s like seeing your favorite artist at a concert. The energy is raw and it’s different every night.”
Particularly meaningful to Treach is the response from the audience, especially in Black theater. “Black theater hits different,” he said, describing how the crowd’s interactive excitement fuels the cast. From calling out iconic movie names to reacting passionately to the performances, the energy brings life to the production.
Treach also reflected on hip-hop’s evolution, declaring its growth far exceeded any expectations. “They said hip-hop wouldn’t last. Now it’s 50 years strong. It’s not because of just us; it’s every new generation that keeps it alive,” he said, paying respect to both past pioneers and rising stars today.
Through it all, Treach remains dedicated to celebrating hip-hop and the 90s legacy, now blending nostalgia with live artistry. His drive, passion, and creative versatility continue to inspire audiences, both on and off the stage.
