Running is hard. Ask anybody who’s ever try to run consistently, the act of getting up to run on a regular basis can be an exercise in futility. While running is a popular exercise due to ease of entry, one only need a good pair of shoes and appropriate clothing to start, it takes a great deal of self-motivation to pound the pavement day in and day out. With that in mind, Ida Keeling is something of a legend. Ida is 100-years-old, but just set a new world-record at the Penn Relay’s in the 100-meter dash.
“As the oldest competitor in the 80 and older Masters Mixed 100-meter dash at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Keeling set a new world record for her 100-plus age group, WPVI reports. The great-great-grandmother from New York City felt so good about her 1:17 finish time that she celebrated with a few push-ups.”
Ida said the race was “wonderful” and that she was “very happy to offer all of this crowd a nice example of what you can do for yourself, and I thank God every day for my blessings.”
Her daughter, Shelley Keeling, got her mother into running after the unsolved death of Shelley’s two brothers.
“After her first race, a 5K through Brooklyn, Keeling found that running did offer some relief. “I just threw off all of the bad memories, the aggravation, the stress,” she recalled to the Times.”
Ida credits her diet of whole grains, vegetables, and an hour of daily exercise as reasons she was able to complete the race.
