(Richmond, VA)  —  Today is tornado preparedness day in Virginia and more than 760-thousand people have registered to participate in a statewide tornado drill. No part of Virginia is immune from tornadoes and they can hit at any time of the year, at any time of the day. Today’s drill, which is set for 9:45 a.m., is sponsored by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service.  To start the drill, the NWS will send a test warning that will trigger a tone alert and broadcast message.  When the test warning is sounded, people should move to a previously designated tornado safe area in their building. Safe areas are basements, interior rooms, bathrooms, closets or hallways on the lowest level of a building.  For more information on the drill or preparing for a tornado, log on to http://www.vaemergency.com.
