Wizards Trade Kelly Olynyk to Spurs in Multi-Asset Deal

The Washington Wizards made another move in their ongoing roster overhaul, sending Kelly Olynyk to the San Antonio Spurs. This deal brings young guards Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley to DC, along with a 2026 second-round pick—the least favorable of Dallas, Philadelphia, or Oklahoma City. Olynyk’s departure comes shortly after he was acquired in a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans that also brought CJ McCollum to Washington.
Olynyk, a 6’11″ versatile power forward, averaged a reliable 10.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game last season. His ability to stretch the floor with his shooting and his knack for making smart plays made him an intriguing fit for the Wizards. Despite not getting much time to integrate into Washington’s plans, Olynyk now joins a young Spurs roster headlined by generational talent Victor Wembanyama. For San Antonio, Olynyk’s veteran experience and spacing could be key in easing the transition for Wembanyama while providing stability in the frontcourt.
On the flip side, Washington’s return signals its continued commitment to rebuilding. Branham offers scoring ability and polished playmaking skills, attributes that align well with the Wizards’ focus on developing young talent. Meanwhile, Wesley is a high-energy guard known for his defensive instincts and upside, giving Washington another versatile piece to mold. Both players will have ample opportunities to grow under Head Coach Brian Keefe’s system.
The inclusion of the 2026 second-round pick might seem minor on paper, but every draft asset matters for a team in the midst of a roster reboot. It adds flexibility as the Wizards look to build a competitive core capable of contending in the Eastern Conference down the line.
