A new bill is being considered by Virginia lawmakers which would allow a casino to be built in Tysons Corner. This move has potential to bring significant development to Fairfax County. Introduced by Sen. Scott Surovell, the bill adds Fairfax County to the list of eligible localities for a casino and the proposed site must be located within one-quarter mile of an existing station on the Metro Silver Line, effectively pointing to Tysons as the potential location.

In the bill, Sen. Surovell suggests that the project is a source of thousands of construction and hospitality jobs, but many are worried about an increase crime and traffic in the area as well as a negative affect on small businesses. Under the state’s revenue-sharing model, 70% of revenue would go to Virginia, and 30% would go to the locality. However, Sen. Surovell has expressed interest in adjusting the split to benefit Fairfax County more.

If the bill passes both chambers and is signed by the governor, it would still need approval from voters in a referendum.
