A D.C. woman is facing thousands of dollars in speeding tickets for a car that isn’t hers. For the past six months, Angela Devore has been receiving traffic citations from cameras across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Since June, Devore has received over 20 speeding tickets from D.C. alone, along with additional citations from Maryland and Virginia, amounting to thousands of dollars in fines.

The issue stems from mistaken identity: while Devore drives a four-door Volkswagen Jetta, the violations show a two-door convertible BMW with D.C. plates nearly identical to hers. The only difference is a dash in the middle of the first zero on the BMW’s plate.

Devore has been working with the DMV to correct the issue. Maryland and Virginia quickly dismissed her citations, but her D.C. case remains under review after a recent hearing. Devore is pushing not only for the dismissal of the tickets but also for reimbursement for new tags to prevent further misidentifications.
