Texas Governor Gregg Abbott signed the Sandra Bland Act into law last Thursday to enforce new changes in how jailed defendants are treated when arrested.
The law requires county jails to make it easier for mentally ill or disabled defendants to receive bond due to mental health and substance abuse issues.

The act also mandates officers go through de-escalation training which could have prevented the entire ordeal from happening in Sandra Bland’s 2015 death. Agencies will now investigate jail deaths as well due to the new law.
This is definitely a step in the right direction, although there were multiple revisions to remove requirements for additional proof for stopping and searching vehicle, and prohibiting arrests over offenses punishable by a fine.
