On Tuesday morning, Darren Seals, a popular activist who was instrumental in the Ferguson protests following the police-shooting death of Mike Brown, was found fatally shot in a burning car in St. Louis County, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. He was 29.

The St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons and Bomb and Arson Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding Seals’ murder. Details are limited at this time.

Seals’ peers reacted with sorrow on Twitter and alluded to foul play, labeling it murder.
