Dear Tom,

My name is Elizabeth Simpson and I am a senior who will graduate this fall from Alabama A&M University.   I would like to nominate my father, Carl Simpson, for the Christmas Wish.    Three years ago, my dad began to suffer with a heart condition and sought medical care between our local hospital in Huntsville, Alabama and UAB Medical Center in Birmingham.

In 2012 my father’s health began to improve and he was able to return to work and all the activities he did prior to falling ill.     However, by mid-February his condition began to deteriorate and he began traveling back and forth for treatment between Birmingham and Vanderbilt university medical center in NashvilleTennessee.    It was during this time that he was diagnosed with cardiomiopathy, a disease of the heart muscle which reduced his heart’s ability to pump blood to the rest of his body.   It was determined by his medical team that he would need a heart transplant to survive.

On October 15, 2015 we found out that my dad was officially listed to get a new heart and the way that things are going that could happen soon.

Mr. Joyner, whenever one gets a new organ, they have to live in the vicinity of the hospital, so that the physicians can monitor them to make sure that their body doesn’t reject their new organ.    When my dad gets his transplant, he’ll have to take a leave of absence from work and both he and my mom will have to live in Nashville for a total of six weeks.    This means that there won’t be any income coming into our home, other than mine.

It is my Christmas wish to ask for your help to ease my father’s stress by assisting with their living expenses while he recovers.    I understand that “man worry” is something serious and while he is away, he not only wants to make sure that his daughters are taken care of in his absence—but that our mortgage and utilities will continue to be paid and that he and my mom are in a stable living conditions while away from home.
