Meet Belinda Young – October’s Phenomenal Woman!

Submitted by Carol Kosh: “I am nominating my friend and sister Belinda Young for the Phenomenal Woman contest. She is truly an example. Not only has she been a strong advocate for women and children who have experienced domestic violence, but she has also been a very committed supporter and advocate for parents and children who have experienced bullying. Having been bullied and sexually abused as a child, Belinda has had first-hand experience. She began volunteering some 20+ years ago at several shelters in the DMV. She has always made her voice known wherever the platform. Before her forced medical retirement, Belinda worked at the National Institutes of Health where she was an EEO representative and a Chairperson for the Blacks-in-Government. In the early 1990’s she found her true calling and became an events coordinator where she met several women in the DMV who were transitioning from DC shelters. The Lord laid it upon her heart to mentor them! She also owned a successful travel agency and found creative ways to encourage our youth to travel. For 4+ years she has volunteered/hosted fund-raising events for the Safe Shores of DC Children’s Advocacy Center ensuring that abused/neglected children experience memorable holidays. As if that was not enough, Belinda has written her first book entitled “Truth Be Told” which talks about a woman who was born/raised in the DMV who faced all forms of abuse/bullying. Her compassion to help others has always been her motivation. She recently spoke at the “For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide” play in the DMV. Her latest project has been the opening of her bookstore and gift boutique in Laurel, MD that will showcase local/national talent (writing, poetry, comedy, and singing), also featuring hometown hand-crafted items. I could go on about Belinda and her unwavering dedication but my words are limited.”

Majic 102.3 salutes Belinda Young, a phenomenal woman, for making a difference in the lives of others!
