Nate Parker

It’s been a crazy month for Nate Parker.

He received serious backlash after his rape trial of 17 years ago hit the mainstream press, which affected the reception of his directorial debut The Birth of a Nation. The movie, based on the 1831 slave rebellion led by Nat Turner, hit theaters this weekend. The movie was slammed with bad reviews for historical inaccuracies. However, a critical flop doesn’t always mean a box office flop, but, in this case, the Fox Searchlight film bombed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film came in at number six, expecting to bring in $10 million, but only pulled in $7.1 million. “This is a pretty pedestrian result,” said Jeff Bock, a box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations. Who knows the long-term effects this will have on Parker’s career. He was heavily criticized for the way he handled the rape accusations in several interviews, especially with Robin Roberts. Sadly, the woman who accused him of rape committed suicide in 2012.

Did you see The Birth of Nation, if so, did you love it or hate it?
