The Obama administration and Democrats across the board applauded the Supreme Court’s decision Thursday to uphold the University of Texas’ affirmative action program.
Saying, “Diversity benefits communities, schools and students from all backgrounds,” U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King released a statement after the ruling.
“I am pleased that the Supreme Court upheld the University of Texas at Austin’s admissions plan. The Department will continue to be a strong supporter of diversity and will work to ensure that all students benefit from school environments as diverse as America itself. As a nation, we are stronger together,” King said in the statement.
U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in a statement that diversity creates a positive forum for scholarship and discovery.
“Our country is stronger, more credible, and more effective when our educational institutions include highly-qualified individuals with roots, cultures, and traditions that reflect our nation’s rich diversity,” Lynch said in the statement. “Going forward, the Department of Justice will continue to stand up for these principles, and to work with colleges and universities to promote diversity in a way that is consistent with the law.”
While praising the decision, chairs of the Democratic National Committee’s Hispanic, Asian Americans Pacific Islanders, and African-American Caucus also seized the moment to hammer Republicans for their narrow thinking and obstructionist agenda.
“[T]oday’s Supreme Court decision also highlights the fact that there remains a vacancy on our highest court,” reads the DNC statement. “Republican leaders refuse to do their jobs and hold hearings and a vote to fill that seat for one reason: they want to elect Donald Trump and give him the power to pick the next justice and fill any other vacancies over the next four years. As the most divisive, reckless, and erratic presidential nominee in modern history, Trump simply lacks the judgment and temperament needed for a job as important and consequential as choosing a Supreme Court justice.
“Democrats will continue to fight for a full and functioning Supreme Court that will uphold the principle of equal opportunity for all,” the statement continues. “We must elect a president who has the experience and temperament to carefully, thoughtfully and competently choose our next Supreme Court nominees.”

SCOTUS Upholds University Of Texas’ Affirmative Action Plan
The Supreme Court ruled Thursday to uphold the University of Texas’ affirmative action program, which ensures the admission of minority students, NBC News reports.
In a 4-3 ruling, the court ruled that the Texas program is constitutional, according to POLITICO.
In their decision, the Justices wrote:
“The Court’s affirmance of the University’s admissions policy today does not necessarily mean the University may rely on that same policy without refinement,” the court wrote in its majority opinion.”It is the University’s ongoing obligation to engage in constant deliberation and continued reflection regarding its admissions policies.”
Plaintiff Abigail Noel Fisher, a White woman from Texas, initially challenged the school’s program in 2008, arguing that the affirmative action policy was unfair and barred her admittance from the school. She claimed she was the victim of racial discrimination and filed her case in the Supreme Court.
SCOTUS sent the case to a lower court, with instructions on how to approach the matter. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit ruled in Fisher’s favor, finding the program unconstitutional. After, Fisher took the case back to SCOTUS, who ruled in the school’s favor on Thursday.
