Prince’s two ex-wives held a private memorial to celebrate the singer’s life on Wednesday, according to reports. The service, hosted by Manuela Testolini and Mayte Garcia, took place in Los Angeles. Attendees included Dita Von Teese, Tavis Smiley, and Herbie Hancock. Testolini and Garcia decided to join forces and host their own event because they reportedly weren’t allowed to attend a memorial service held for him in April. Prince’s family members released a statement stating they have not held an official memorial service for the singer yet. “We would like everyone to know that, contrary to previous and current reports, there has been no memorial, funeral or tribute service for Prince that was organized or authorized by the family or Paisley Park representatives. Together, the family is planning an official memorial service and public event to take place in the near future,” read the statement. “Prince and his music influenced so many people that we feel inspired to celebrate his life and legacy in just the right way. We appreciate the public’s patience and have been comforted by your outpouring of love, support and condolences. We look forward to sharing with the world this celebration of, and farewell to, our Prince.” Read more.
Legislation Passed to Overcome Opioid Crisis
On Wednesday, the White House passed 10 bills in an effort to overcome America’s opioid crisis. One is designed to develop a group that will strengthen the protocol for doctors to prescribe painkillers and gauge their patient’s pain. Another requires states that get federal grants for child protective services to have laws that guarantee babies born to opioid-addicted mothers will receive the proper care. “This historic package of anti-drug bills will deliver critical funds to address the abuse of heroin and opiates, support our loved ones on their path towards recovery, and slow the flow of drugs into our country,” said Rep. Vern Buchanan in a statement. Despite the progress, many lawmakers believe there needs to be more funding to create effective change. “We need to not only pass these bills, but we need to commit in a bipartisan way that we’re going to provide the necessary funding, and I hope we can do that,” said Rep. Jim McGovern. President Obama has demanded $1.1 billion to overcome the opioid crisis. Read more.
Black Michigan Police Officer Sues Department
A Black Michigan police officer is suing the Mundy Township Police Department for allegedly forcing him to make Michigan State basketball player Mateen Cleaves look guilty in a sexual assault case. Officer Brian Ogle filed a lawsuit on May 4 claiming the department chastised him for exposing their state law violations. According to the lawsuit, Ogle “found himself at odds with defendants because he would not acquiesce to defendants’ pressure to portray Mr. Cleaves as guilty of sexual assault.” Ogle launched his investigation surrounding Cleaves in September 2015 and notified the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office about violations being made by the police department on November 17. After exposing the department, he was suspended without pay for two days. Ogle now wants $25,000 for lost earnings and emotional damages. Read more.
