President Obama today is announcing legislation that will remove a requirement for job applicants to check a box if they have a criminal record. This will be mandated in the federal government’s hiring process.

While this rule used to be seen as a way for potential employers to screen criminal backgrounds, it has increasingly led to potential discrimination against hiring someone for an offense that either wasn’t severe, or occurred long ago. This type of job screening has led to about 60-75% of former inmates not being able to get a job after their first year out of jail, which eventually leads to recidivism.
