Relatives of a mentally ill Black man who was fatally shot in February by police in Miami Gardens, Florida have released footage of the frightening encounter, according to the New York Daily News.

The 19-minute police video released Wednesday shows an officer ordering Lavall Hall, 25, to “get on the f—ing ground or you’re dead,” moments before shooting five deadly rounds on Feb. 15.

A second video shows Hall running away from police just seconds before the officer’s commands and fatal shots, the publication notes.

During a news conference Wednesday, Hall’s mother, Catherine Daniels, who called police about 5 a.m. on the morning of the shooting to get help controlling her schizophrenic son, joined family members and lawyers to debunk the police account of the killing, the report notes.

The video comes just a day after an officer in North Charleston, South Carolina, was charged with murder in the shooting death of Walter Scott, an unarmed 50-year-old Black man, following a traffic stop, underscoring the problem of police violence against unarmed African-Americans.

The New York Daily News reports:

Authorities say Hall was wildly swinging a metal broom handle before the shooting and that the officer who fired feared for his life, but Melissa Edwards, the mother of Hall’s 8-year-old daughter, saw things differently.

“I was outraged, furious, devastated and very emotional,” Edwards told the Miami Herald. “They killed him, murdered him.”

The family is calling for an independent investigation, the News says, arguing that Officer Eddo Trimino was unjustified in firing his weapon.
