Bio:

AMIJ, is a recording artist, singer, drummer, songwriter, arranger, producer, and performer.

Her musical roots take her back to Madison, Wisconsin, where she was born and raised. Madison is also where AMIJ began a lifelong journey in pursuit of her passion for music. She dawned her performance wings at the early age of 7, and at 12 she was given the opportunity to gig with her father, who introduced her to extreme musical diversity, and musicianship. As a master musician, he groomed AMIJ as a vocalist and as a musician to  play drums, piano, and trumpet. She continued performing in local bands as a teenager.

A move to Minneapolis landed AMIJ in the drummers’ seat of an all girl band “Kat Klub” as a regular performing act at Glam Slam (Prince’s club), Fine Line, and First Avenue (Where Purple Rain was filmed). A chance encounter with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis positioned her to work directly with Flyte Time, where she was introduced to Mint Condition. On many occasions, Kat Klub was the opening act for Mint Condition as they hit the top of the charts. Many members of the Minneapolis family, such as, Stokley (Mint Condition), and Michael Bland (New Power Generation), were often personal guests at AMIJ’s other performances in the Minneapolis area. Her performances led to additional work as a drummer for Flyte Time artist Lisa Keith, as well as, for Cynthia Johnson formerly of Chic, and for Jazz singer Debbie Duncan.  AMIJ was later approached by Sheila E., and by Prince to join his female group. She then made a transition that drastically changed her musical path. She was offered a position with Salt’n Pepa’s all-girl band “For Ya Pleasure” and accepted. The opportunity landed her a home in Washington DC, and placed her on national, and international tours with other award winning recording acts, such as Hi-Five, and Crystal Waters. AMIJ has made several television appearances, and has also shared the stage with R. Kelly, Scott Ambush of Spyro Gyra, and many upcoming artists.

Her musical journey has taken AMIJ all over the globe, and has afforded her the opportunity to experience the variances, which are presented by the many cultures she has had the pleasure to explore. As she incorporates the influences into her music, AMIJ reaches into the depths of her soul and captivates her audience through her voice, her drums, and her writing.  AMIJ describes her sound as “Fusive Soul.” Her sound is made up if all of her most powerful influences and appealing styles of music such as; Urban R&B, heavy rock, Classical, Neo-Soul, and Jazz-Fusion. She creates a distinct sound that is fresh and allows the real elements of music to live and breathe. AMIJ combines her natural gifts with formal training as a vocalist and musician. She is undeniably unique, and a welcomed surprise to everyone who has the pleasure to experience AMIJ…..
