Brooklyn Public Library Celebrates Soca King Machel Montano

If you love soca, get ready to experience the genre in a whole new way as Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) celebrates one of its pioneering figures, Machel Montano, with Journey of a Soca King: The Exhibition.

Opening Aug. 22 at Central Library, the exhibition, created by the Machel Montano Foundation for Greatness, celebrates Montano’s remarkable career and his lifelong contributions to soca music and Caribbean culture. According to a press release, the exhibition is accompanied by programming at branches throughout Brooklyn and offers visitors an intimate look at the artist’s journey, from his childhood in Trinidad and Tobago to his rise as one of soca’s most influential global ambassadors.

Over more than five decades, Machel Montano has played a defining role in bringing soca to audiences around the world. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of soca, Montano began performing at just 7 years old in 1982, according to his website. His debut album, Too Young To Soca, released in 1985, quickly earned widespread acclaim and established the young performer as a force to watch.

Journey of a Soca King: The Exhibition: A Journey Through Machel’s Career.

Journey of a Soca King: The Exhibition features a curated collection of artifacts from Montano’s extraordinary career, including iconic costumes, trophies and vinyl records. At Central Library, visitors can also listen to selections from Montano’s extensive catalog at the library’s vinyl listening station and watch pivotal moments from his life and career.

The exhibition comes on the heels of the 2026 documentary Like Ah Boss: Journey of a Soca King, which chronicles Montano’s legendary 16 performances during the 2015 Carnival season, among other defining moments in his career. The documentary will be projected onto the facade of Central Library on Sept. 3.

For Brooklyn, the exhibition is also a homecoming.

Montano’s relationship with the borough dates back to his childhood. In 1984, at just 9 years old, he came to Brooklyn after receiving a scholarship to participate in Marie Brooks’ summer programming. The workshops he experienced during that time would become formative to his artistic development.

That same year, the young performer made his historic debut at Madison Square Garden, appearing alongside calypso legends including the Mighty Sparrow, the Mighty Shadow and Lord Kitchener. Years later, in the mid-1990s, Montano lived on Utica Avenue in Brooklyn and recorded his first Road March-winning song, “Big Truck,” in the borough.

This exhibition will offer visitors an opportunity to explore the enduring impact of Caribbean music and culture through the life and career of one of its most influential and beloved artists.”

“Brooklyn helped raise me,” said Machel Montano. “I lived here, I learned here, and some of my earliest audiences were right in these neighborhoods. So for this work to come back to Brooklyn, in a place that is free and open to anybody who walks through the door, means everything. The Caribbean community built a home here, and this exhibition is a way of acknowledging the mark we as a people have made on this city. What moves me most is thinking about a young person walking in, seeing the costumes and the trophies and the records, and understanding that this came from a small island and reached the world. I hope every child who visits leaves knowing their culture deserves that kind of space.”

Bringing Caribbean Culture Across Brooklyn

The celebration extends beyond Central Library. Branches across Brooklyn’s Little Caribbean neighborhoods, including Clarendon, Rugby, Crown Heights, Flatbush and Brower Park, will host readings, arts and crafts workshops, and cultural experiences designed for youth and adults.

Brooklyn is home to one of the largest Caribbean diasporas outside the Caribbean itself. For generations, Caribbean immigrants and their descendants have helped shape the borough’s music, literature, food, businesses, political activism and artistic communities.

Montano’s story provides a powerful lens through which to explore that broader history. Throughout his career, he has helped transform soca from a regional Caribbean sound into a global cultural movement while remaining firmly connected to his Trinidadian roots. His journey reflects themes of migration, innovation, resilience, entrepreneurship and cultural preservation—all of which mirror Brooklyn’s own history as a crossroads for communities from around the world.

Machel Montano’s Soca Legacy: A Career Built on Breaking Barriers

Montano’s mission has always been to bring soca into the mainstream. In April 1986, Montano took soca to U.S. national television when he appeared on the popular program Star Search. Just two years earlier, at age 9, he had already made history with his May 1984 appearance at Madison Square Garden’s Felt Forum in New York City, where he performed as a support act for the Mighty Sparrow and other leading calypsonians.

Montano continued to expand soca’s international reach throughout the following decades. In 2008, he received three major honors, including the Bob Marley Award for Entertainer of the Year at the International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) at New York’s historic Apollo Theatre. That same year, he was recognized at the first annual BET J Virtual Awards as Best Caribbean Artiste of the Year.

In January 2010, Montano became the first soca artiste to headline the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival. Later that year, he became the only two-time recipient of the Bob Marley Award for Entertainer of the Year at the Martins International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA). He also joined international recording artist Pitbull as a special guest artist for the U.S. dates of the five-week Mr. Worldwide Carnival tour.

Carnival 2014 brought another milestone. Montano captured the Power Soca Monarch title with his hit “Ministry of Road” before taking the song all the way to Road March supremacy. The track also earned him his first Soul Train Award in November 2014 for Best International Performance, following two previous nominations.

Today, Montano is widely recognized as the King of Soca. The Trinidad and Tobago-born singer, songwriter, producer and cultural icon is the country’s most decorated Road March champion, with a record 12 titles. He is also a National Calypso Monarch, Chutney Soca Monarch and recipient of the Hummingbird Gold National Medal.

With a career spanning music, entrepreneurship and cultural advocacy, Montano continues to champion the music and culture of Trinidad and Tobago while working to expand soca’s place on the global stage.
