Mayor Bowser's RFK Redevelopment Spurs Jobs & Growth
Mayor Muriel Bowser Talks Redevelopment of RFK Stadium Site, Promising Jobs and Growth for D.C.

Mayor Muriel Bowser shared exciting plans for the redevelopment of the iconic RFK stadium site with Vic Jagger in the Morning with Huggy Lowdown, marking a significant milestone for Washington, D.C. This ambitious project will not only bring the Washington Commanders back to the District but also transform 180 acres into a vibrant hub of economic and community activity.
Mayor Bowser emphasized the economic potential of the project, describing it as a “big private investment in our future economy.” With D.C. facing changes in its economic landscape, including a reduction of federal jobs, she stressed the importance of bolstering industries like sports, entertainment, and hospitality. The redevelopment is projected to create up to 16,000 jobs and generate $20 billion in tax revenue by 2030. She highlighted that this would provide opportunities for local businesses, housing development, parks, and recreation, establishing RFK as a key economic anchor.
The mayor also addressed community involvement, recognizing the historical and emotional connection Washingtonians have with the RFK site. “We want to hear from Washingtonians about how we can help recreate that feeling,” she said, underscoring the need to honor RFK’s legacy while building for the future. The city has already engaged residents and small business owners through meetings and discussions over the course of several years. Bowser emphasized transparency and community input, advocating for a planning process that is both thorough and efficient.
Catering to local needs is central to the vision for RFK’s redevelopment. Plans include a state-of-the-art indoor sports complex, diverse housing options, and accessible parks connecting the site to the Anacostia River. “We’re building a new neighborhood that reflects what the community wants,” Bowser assured.
While acknowledging potential concerns, the mayor expressed confidence in the project’s overwhelming support, including from the D.C. Council. Bowser also pointed out the importance of finding new revenue streams for the city. “The choice is clear,” she explained. “We can create jobs and opportunities or raise taxes for residents.”
Set for completion by 2030, the redevelopment of RFK is poised to infuse new energy into the city while respecting its historic legacy. “We’re a world-class city, and this is what we deserve,” Bowser declared, demonstrating her commitment to innovative growth for Washington, D.C.
