During a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, singer Mel B cleared up negative assumptions about her recent decision to check herself into a rehab facility.

Let’s be clear.

Mel B wants everyone to know that she’s not an alcoholic or sex addict. Actually what prompted her decision to heck into rehab was post-traumatic stress disorder, also known as PTSD.

PTSD is a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.

An estimated 70 percent of adults in the United States have experienced a traumatic event at least once in their lives and up to 20 percent of these people go on to develop PTSD.

Working on her upcoming book Brutally Honest forced Mel B to revisit what she referred to as her “emotionally abusive” relationship with her ex-husband Stephen Belafonte, triggering extensive emotional distress.

Mel B divorced Belafonte last December after 10 years of marriage.
