Welp… NW and NE DC…. A Boil Water Advisory is in effect right now! DC Water is advising customers to boil their tap water before drinking or cooking with it. A spokesperson for DC Water says the advisory could remain in effect for up to two days.

What had happened was… A valve issue caused an unexpected drop in water pressure, which could have allowed contaminants to get into the water. According to DC Water, customers should use cooled, boiled water or bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, preparing and cooking food, making ice, preparing infant formula or giving water to pets.

Here’s what DC Water suggests:

  • If water is discolored, run the tap until clear before boiling
  • Bring water to a rolling boil for three minutes
  • Allow water to cool before using
  • Store cooled water in a clean container with a cover
