The Hip-Hop Kickstarter campaign aligns with NMAAHC’s mission to tell the American story through the African American Lens.

In partnership with Smithsonian Folkways and the hip-hop community, the National Museum of African American History and Culture launched a Kickstarter campaign to produce a Hip-Hop and Rap Anthology. Kickstarter is an online global crowdfunding campaign to support creative projects. This Kickstarter campaign allows fans, enthusiasts, and those interested in hip-hop, the opportunity to be a part of the community that helps bring the Hip-Hop and Rap Anthology to life. The goal is $250,000 and it’s all or nothing, which means if they do not raise the full amount, they will not receive any funds.

The Hip-Hop and Rap Anthology is a compilation of nine CDs, more than 120 tracks and a 300-page book with extensive liner notes, essays by artists and scholars including never-before-published photographs from the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s collection.  Why is the Smithsonian doing this? Simply put: Hip Hop is more than just music, it’s a culture.

Currently, the Anthology is not finished yet and only partially funded. So how can you help?

  • Donate to the Kickstarter to help support the production of the Anthology.
  • Along with receiving the finished product, you receive rewards for backing the campaign at every level. Rewards range from an autographed Public Enemy Limited Print Anthology and tour of the National Museum of African American History and Culture by Quest Love
  • Encourage your friends, family and network to support the Kickstarter campaign by sharing on social media using the hashtag, #hiphophistory and tagging @NMAAHC in your posts.
