“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” premiered this weekend on HBO & Oprah Winfrey is responding to claims that she exploited Henrietta Lacks.

The late Lacks’ son, Lawrence, believes Oprah and HBO should pay the family for using his mother’s story. Oprah says that while she believes the Lacks family should have been paid for all those cells used by the millions of drug companies she doesn’t think it is her or HBO’s responsibility to compensate for that. Oprah feels it was her job to bring the story to light which is what Deborah [Henrietta’s youngest daughter] is saying she wanted.
