Eminem In '8 Mile'

Oscar-winning screenwriter Curtis Hanson—director of Eminem‘s semi-autobiographical film, 8 Mile—has died at the age of 71. Hanson passed away in his Hollywood Hills home of natural causes, NBC News reports. So far, there are no further details.

One of the many who worked with Hanson, Eminem released a statement regarding his death.

“Curtis Hanson believed in me and our crazy idea to make a rap battle movie set in Detroit,” he said. “He basically made me into an actor for ‘8 Mile.’ I’m lucky I got to know him.”

Hanson began his directing and screenwriting career in the early 1970s, scoring his first major success with The Hand That Rocks the Cradle in 1992. He also directed The River Wild with Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon in 1994, and won a screenwriting Oscar for L.A. Confidential in 1998.
