Black women are turning a negative stereotype on its head and having their voices heard with the viral hashtag #LoudBlackGirls. The conversation was sparked by Erica Garner, the daughter of Eric Garner, who revealed to Buzzfeed in a recent interview that she felt she had to be “belligerent just to be heard” after a failed town hall meeting with President Barack Obama.
The statement resonated with social activist Feminista Jones who shared her sentiments on Twitter and encouraged Black women to share experiences where they lifted their own voices. This started a chain reaction and Black women all over the world joined in on the conversation.
