Despite the fact that numerous studies have proven that Black men are pretty amazing and hands on Dads, society continues to hold on to this misconception that our men don’t step up to the parental plate.
But right in time for Father’s Day, the Campaign for Black Male Achievement has launched a new photo series of Black fathers to break down these persistent racial stereotypes in order to show the beauty and realness of African-American fatherhood.
Photographed by Zun Lee, the campaign pairs powerful images with empowering and uplifting stats about Black Dads. According to the Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention:
- Black dads are more involved with their kids on a daily basis than dads from other racial groups.
- Black fathers ate meals with their young children more than their white and Latino counterparts.
- Black fathers also escorted their 5-to-18-year-old children to activities more than fathers of other races.
- More black fathers live with their kids than live apart from them.
- Over 70 percent of black dads bathe, diaper or dress their children every day.
Yep, Black Dads are dope, but sadly we don’t hear enough about it on the news or on the blogs.
So to further celebrate Black fatherhood on Father’s Day and beyond, the Campaign also created the hashtag #BlackMaleReimagined to encourage our community to share pics of their fathers and/or children on social media. Delightfully, many answered their call.
Just beautiful. Please join in on the celebration on Twitter and your other social media pages with the hashtag #BlackMaleReimagined!
