Feminist, activist and actress Amandla Stenberg just scored a new gig. The outspoken 17-year-old will star in the upcoming movie, “The Hate U Give”, one of the first feature films to address how the Black Lives Matter movement has affected millennials.

Here are the details of the plot via The Huffington Post: Amandla will play Starr, a 16-year-old girl who grew up in poverty and now attends a suburban prep school. The character witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend and must share her testimony in court, which comes with serious challenges and consequences.

Angela Thomas began writing the novel that the film is based on in 2011 when she was a senior at Belhaven University. She was inspired by the protests that took place following the killing of Oscar Grant.

The title of the novel and the film is inspired by 2Pac‘s iconic stomach tattoo, “T.H.U.G Life”.

The movie adaptation was sold to film studio Fox 2000 and it will be directed by George Tillman Jr., who also directed “Notorious” and “Barbershop.” The screenplay will be written by Audrey Wells.

Amandla most recently starred in the NBC series, Mr. Robinson and she was the breakout star of the first Hunger Games film.
