Officers Demoted For Not Intervening During Trump Rally Riot

North Carolina Sheriff Earl Butler has announced that five of his deputies have been reprimanded for their inaction in the midst of an altercation. Video footage showed police standing idly by as anti-Trump protester Rakeem Jones was punched in the face by Trump supporter John McGraw. The sneak attack caused Jones, 26 to stumble and he was then tackled by officers as he attempted to leave the rally. Butler said the decisions his officers made during the March 9 rally, “…have never been and will not ever be tolerated under the policies of this office.” All five officers are on probation for the next year. Three of the Cumberland County deputies were demoted and suspended without pay for five days and another two were suspended without pay for three days. McGraw, 78 has since been arrested and charged with assault. NYDaily News

Women Pilots Make History In Saudi Arabia

In a country where only men are allowed to drive, women in Saudi Arabia have decided to become pilots. An all-woman crew, led by Sharifah Czarena Surainy recently landed a Royal Brunei flight in Saudi Arabia. The first woman to receive Saudi certification to fly a plane was Hanadi Al-Hindi, 35, in 2014. Royal Brunei Airlines is currently using social media to recruit women to participate in their engineer apprenticeship and cadet pilot program. In November, an 18-year-old woman became the seventh female trainee of the pilot program. “As a woman, a Bruneian woman, it is such a great achievement,” said Surainy. “It’s really showing the younger generation or the girls especially that whatever they dream of, they can achieve it.” Mashable

University Plans To Revise Their Controversial Shield

Harvard University’s governing body, The Harvard Corporation voted to redesign the Harvard Law School shield because of it’s association with slavery. The shield was designed in 1936 in honor of Isaac Royall who is historically referred to as the school’s first endower. Royall is also the son of an Antiguan slaveholder which was the cause for contention. Harvard President Drew Faust and Martha Minow, dean of the law school both support the updating of the shield which will most likely be unveiled in 2017 during the law school’s bicentennial celebration. In a statement supporting the change, Minow said,”…The school will actively explore other steps to recognize rather than to suppress the realities of its history, mindful of our shared obligation to honor the past not by seeking to erase it, but rather by bringing it to light and learning from it.” NBCNews

School On Lockdown After Student Brings Gun To Class

A fifth-grade student at P.S. 40 elementary school in Queens, NY brought a pistol to school in his backpack after finding it under his grandfather’s bed. The boy reportedly told police that he was used to loading and unloading the gun which was found with a single bullet. His grandpa, Kenneth Miley, 54 was held on $30,000 bond on criminal possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment charges. Miley’s lawyer, Richard Kopacz claims that the gun doesn’t even belong to his client. Supposedly, the grandfather found it in his backyard and was planning to turn it in to the police. Two additional live rounds of ammunition were also discovered beneath his bed. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. No charges have been filed against the 11-year-old student. NY Daily News
