Lighting and harsh makeup have been named the culprits in an unusual story of a family not recognizing their own late grandmother, causing brief chaos for a Washington D.C. funeral home.
According to NBC Washington, the family of Virginia Gray claimed their grandmother was missing after they viewed whom they thought was another woman dressed in the clothes provided to Horton’s Funeral Home last month. Gray, 83, died Feb. 19 after falling unconscious.
She is survived by her daughter, four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Tawana Murphy, one of the grandchildren, was sure the woman in the casket wasn’t Gray. Her grandson, Quentin Gray, called the incident “lunacy.” On Friday, doctors told the family and other officials they were wrong.
Via NBC Washington:
“The physician determined it is my grandmother. We had them to strip her down of all of her makeup and put her in her natural light — as much as her natural light as possible,” the woman’s grandson, Quentin Gray, told News4’s Pat Collins. “Now we can move forward and have closure and get a funeral going,” Quentin Gray said.
Glad to see the family is finally able to move on and celebrate the life of their beloved matriarch.
