A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan early Saturday morning, killing at least 14 people and injuring hundreds.

Geologists report that the earthquake happened around 4 a.m. just 30 miles east of Tainan, the city worst hit by the catastrophe and home to about 1.8 million people. Rescuers found two collapsed residential buildings, including one that was a care center for newborn babies and mothers. Local Taiwanese news agencies reported more than 100 people missing.

The earthquake occurred just days before the Lunar New Year celebrations began, where the population is expected to increase due to families hosting guests.

We pray for the nation of Taiwan during this devastating time.
