Mug of light beer in pub

We get it: you like to drink. But is the rest of the world just as alcohol-obsessed as you?

According to a new study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, or OECD, the USA doesn’t even rank in the top 10 countries that consume the most alcohol. The most boozed-up country is Lithuania with 14 liters of alcohol consumed per capita, followed by Estonia, France, Czech Republic, and Ireland, which fall in the 11-12 liter range. The study aims to show how alcohol consumption has changed from 2000 to 2013.

The weirdest variable is the age during which the study begins to collect data. The OECD describes alcohol consumption as “annual sales of pure alcohol in litres per person aged 15 years and older.”

The study also found a relation between people’s income and the amount of liquor they consume.

OECD analysis based on individual-level data show that hazardous drinking and heavy episodic drinking are on the rise in young people and women especially. Men of low socioeconomic status are more likely to drink heavily than those of a higher socioeconomic status, while the opposite is observed in women,” according to the report.

At just 8.8 liters per capita, America falls pretty close to the bottom of the list. Indonesia consumes nearly no alcohol overall, with Turkey, Israel, and India barely drinking 3 liters. Though college bros are probably perplexed by these numbers, Business Insider reports those countries report such low numbers because of religious or cultural reasons – not to mention the drinking age in the U.S. is a relatively high 21 years old.
