Cavin Yarbrough and Alisa Peoples of the super group Yarbrough and Peoples are most known for their 1981 hit Don’t Stop The Music. They talk to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about their Unsung episode, which premieres tonight on TV One.

“Before the song came out, we were just a little band in Dallas, TX…playing the clubs. The song first started as “Before the Music Stops” says Peoples. “Charlie Wilson had just come to Dallas and heard us as Grand Theft. He got Lonnie Simmons and he suggested that it should be uptempo.”

Artists who have sampled the song:

Twenty-two artists have sampled “Don’t Stop The Music.”

“Eve and Alicia Keys did “Gangsta Lovin,” P. Diddy did “Don’t Stop What You’re Doing.” And Southern artist Fat Pat “Tops Drop.”

Do they own the song?

BMG Publishing owns the song, but Yarbrough and Peoples do get royalties.

“The publishing is owned by Lonnie Simmons but a man named John Fogerty brought the whole Total Experience catalog, including the Gap Band’s music. But now it’s all owned by BMG.

The Yarbrough and Peoples Unsung airs tonight at 8 p.m.
