Ellis walked away from the game in 1980, entering a drug rehab program shortly after. He then began working with others struggling with drug addiction and took a job with the New York Yankees. Ellis also helped to start the Black Athletes Foundation for sickle cell research along with other charitable works after his playing career. Sadly,

Ellis died from cirrhosis in 2008.
