A vibrant, black woman journalist with a mild form of autism was killed on Friday in Washington, D.C. after being used as a human shield in a shootout, according to reports.
Charnice Miton, 27, was a writer for Capital Community News, and was, unfortunately, as D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said, at the “wrong place, wrong time.” The chief reports that Milton had just texted her mother after leaving a community meeting, saying she was headed home. Ten minutes later she was dead.
The NY Daily News reports that the journalist was changing buses around 9:40 p.m. on Wednesday, when a man grabbed her just as a teenager with dreadlocks on a dirt bike or moped shot several times, hitting Milton in the chest.
Milton’s parents confirmed that she lived in Southeast D.C., and covered Ward 8, one of the most crime-and-poverty plagued parts of the city. Milton had grown up there, and was committed that community and its people.
“She had her own condition of Asperger’s and it was presumed because of her special condition, she would never excel and never achieve any great feat,” said Milton’s father, Ken McClenton. “Yet watching our daughter walk across the stage at Bishop McNamara High School with honors, then going to Ball State and graduating with honors, then graduating at Syracuse with honors, and then staying here in Southeast Washington D.C., when she could have gone anywhere.”
“I think it’s a real loss not only for us and her family but also the communities that she covered,” says Andrew Lightman, the managing editor of Capital Community News, to the Washington Post. “She was one of a handful of reporters across the District who was looking at the nuts and bolts of everyday life.”
Milton, was one of six killed in as many days in the city, the Washington Post reports.
The intended victim in her case and the shooter both got away.
Her family is asking for those responsible to do the right thing and turn themselves in.
