Andrew Caldwell has apparently learned the lesson that, well, you can’t pray away the gay, as the saying goes.

You may recall the story of Caldwell, who became a virtual hit last fall when he flamboyantly denounced his homosexuality at the 107th Holy Convocation of the Church of God In Christ in St. Louis, Mo.

“I’m not gay no more,” said Caldwell, who was decked out in a paisley jacket, purple shirt, and flouncy bow tie in a video that went viral, spawning jokes, songs, and caricatures.

“I am deliverdt [sic]! I don’t like mens no more! I said I like women…women, women, women, women, women! *speaks in tongues* I say women! I’m not gay! I will not date a man! I will not carry a purse! I will not put on make-up! I will! I will…love…a woman,” he continued.

So theatrical was Caldwell’s proclamation that some questioned his sincerity. Last week, he answered the question himself, confessing in an interview with NBC 12 that he essentially still desires men. He told the station that he was serious at the time and made the pronouncements because the speaker before him had made homophobic comments. Bishop Charles E. Blake Sr., presiding bishop of the Church of God in Christ, apologized for the statements.

But Caldwell was not impressed with the apology. NBC reports:

“They think that they can preach the homosexuals away in the Church of God in Christ,” said Caldwell. “And you can’t.”

“So this notion of you saying you were delivered there on the spot…that is not the case?” we asked Caldwell.

“No,” said Caldwell. “That’s not the case…I still have desires.”

Caldwell went on to express regrets about making the statements, saying he has received death threats and been called homosexual slurs. He asks for more prayer because he truly does want to be delivered from homosexuality.

“That video caused a lot to me…mentally and physically,” Caldwell tells NBC. “I feel that, if I was delivered, God should deliver me more.”

Do any of you believe in “praying away the gay,” or do you believe that such thinking is harmful to the community? Sound off in the comments.
