The Tom Joyner Morning Show talked to Jacqie Carpenter, the commissioner of the CIAA and Tom Murray, COO for the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority about the partnership between the City of Charlotte and the CIAA Tournament.

The tournament, which has been going on for 70 years for men’s basketball and 41 years for women’s is the third most attended basketball tournament in the NCAA. It has has been in Charlotte for the last ten years and a newly minted contract means Charlotte will continue hosting the event for the next six years.

“This is the biggest week of the year for us,” says Murray. “It’s about 15,000 people [and they] bring anywhere from $45-50 million a year, so it’s a big deal.”

Among the events are Fan Fest, which is a public event that has vendors including health checks, shoe donations and more. Elle Varner, Frankie Beverly and Maze and more are performing over the weekend, there’s a Greek step show and Rick Ross’ Maybach Music is hosting just one of the parties.
