Jahi McMath is the 13-year-old Oakland teen who made headlines after being legally declared brain-dead following a routine surgery for sleep apnea. During the procedure she suffered cardiac arrest and was declared brain-dead, but even though an Alameda County Coroner signed a death certificate for her on December 12, 2013, her family insists the teen is alive and has created a petition to get her death certificate revoked.

UCSF Doctor David Durand, who works at the hospital where McMath was admitted, said the hospital was aware of the petition, and that the hospital trusts that “the California courts, the Alameda County Coroner and the State of California will evaluate any claims made by the family’s attorneys and decide them in a lawful and just manner.” Durand also said that no one at the hospital had been in contact with the family since Jahi was released to the coroner on January 5th, 2014.
Chris Dolan, the family’s attorney said he has “Medical experts, including world-class experts on brain death who will testify she is not brain-dead.” Dolan says test results “show that Jahi has brain activity and is not brain-dead – that is an improvement from being brain-dead. She also responds to her mother’s voice.” Dolan says there is visual and EEG evidence of brain activity that will be shared at a planned press conference Friday.
I am beginning to wonder if Jahi’s family is being faithful or foolish? I don’t want to sound insensitive, but when is the right time to let go? Jahi McMath is literally on her deathbed and her family has gone through extreme and costly measure to move her from the Oakland hospital she essentially died in to an undisclosed location for continued treatment. But according to the doctors, Jahi is not doing better, her body is deteriorating. So why is her family continuing to hold on?
Jahi’s family is hopeful and is doing everything they can to care for her, despite all odds being stacked against them. The attorney for the family of Jahi, Christopher Dolan said this week the 13-year-old girl’s body has deteriorated badly since she was declared brain-dead at an Oakland hospital, but it’s an inevitable end, or is it?
