Starkey Hearing Foundation 2014 So The World May Hear Gala

It’s taken her about three weeks, but Hillary Clinton has finally spoken out about her thoughts on what’s happening in Ferguson, Missouri.

During a speaking engagement in San Francisco at the Nexenta OpenSDx Summit, the former Secretary of State said that the disparity between how the legal system treats people of different races has gotten too bad to overlook.

“We cannot ignore the inequities” she stated. “We can do better.”

According to, it was the first time that she had spoken out about Michael Brown‘s shooting death earlier this month, but she was also likely referring to other instances of extreme police brutality towards black people.

It seems that ever since Eric Garner’s death, more reports about officers using excessive force on black people have been coming to light. Before Michael was shot dead by Darren Wilson in Missouri, NYPD cops put a pregnant woman in chokehold (in front of her child) for barbecuing food on her sidewalk.

The problem has gotten out of control in Hillary’s opinion, and she tried to put the problem in perspective for her audience by flipping the dynamic of the inequality around.

“Imagine what we would feel, what we would do if white drivers were three times as likely to be searched by police at a traffic stop as black drivers, instead of the other way around,” she directed. “If white offenders received prison sentences 10 percent longer … if a third of all white men — look at this room, take one third — went to prison during their lifetime. Imagine that.”

It’s not clear why Hillary chose this time share her thoughts Michael’s shooting, but Rev. Al Sharpton called on her to speak on the unarmed teen’s death the weekend after it happened. Since then, reports that she’s done three book signings. She even ignored calls for comment on the matter during her last signing.

Perhaps, though, she was finally motivated to speak out after seeing Michael’s memorial earlier this week.“As a mother and as a human being, my heart just broke for his family, because losing a child is every parent’s greatest fear and an unimaginable loss,” she said.

“I also grieve for that community and for many like it across our country. Behind the dramatic, terrible pictures on television are deep challenges that will be with them and with us long after the cameras move on” Hillary continued. “This is what happens when the bonds of trust and respect that hold any community together fray. Nobody wants to see our streets look like a war zone, not in America. We are better than that.”
