"Power" New York Premiere

Beverly Bond brought her Black Girls Rock movement out for the Afropunk Festival this weekend!

She was simply one of the 223 acts that performed in Brooklyn this weekend. Meshell Ndegeocello, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, SZA, The Tontons, and Kandace Springs also hit the stage.

After winning the battle of the bands last year, Unlocking The Truth came back to the Afropunk festival for another awesome set this afternoon.

It’s been a huge year for the eighth grade band since their victory last summer. They’ve since signed a $1.7 million record deal with Sony Music, opened for Queens of the Stone Age (that’s a huge deal among metal heads), and even performed at Coachella!

Now in its sixth year, Afropunk has continued to prove that there is a market for great rock music among black people.

While the festival is all about celebrating black people rocking out to something other than hip-hop and R&B, the audience was a pretty diverse mix of music lovers! Ice-T‘s wife Coco Austin was spotted backstage, and so was model Cara Delevingne!

The welcoming, diverse atmosphere, was right in line with the inclusive vision for the festival, as highlighted by festival goers this weekend!
