The Peace Corps and Alpha Phi Alpha will work on an ongoing initiative bolstered by the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding. Alpha Phi Alpha members will be placed in better positions to provide volunteer service, along with fortifying their educational and career goals. Alpha Phi Alpha boasts a membership of more than 175,00 members and highlighted the role African Americans play in international affairs and development.

“Today we honor the rich legacy of Alpha Phi Alpha brothers who have served in the Peace Corps and in our country’s international development, diplomacy, and foreign policy arena at large,” Hessler-Radelet said. “And we reaffirm our commitment to building a Peace Corps that reflects the rich diversity of our country and to doing more to recruit and retain the best and the brightest from all of our communities.”

Former Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs and Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Johnnie Carson was also an invited speaker of the event.

The Peace Corps, established by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, is one of the U.S. government’s largest volunteer programs, which helps provide bridges of social and economic development between the U.S. and other nations. The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity was the first intercollegiate Greek-letter group for African-Americans.
