Jurors in an Arizona courtroom reached a verdict today of guilty of first-degree murder in the 4-month long trial against Jodi Arias, accused of murdering her boyfriend. Arias, who was accused of murdering her boyfriend in 2008, Travis Alexander, by shooting him in the head, stabbing him a reported over 20 times which nearly left the late Alexander decapitated. Arias and her family have been adamant that the killing was in self-defense despite evidence showing Alexander had defensive wounds on his hands.

For those unfamiliar with the story, Alexander and Arias dated for a few months in 2007 before breaking up. Alexander reportedly alerted friends that Arias was stalking him as well as accessing his social media accounts, and vandalizing his car.

Alexander’s body was found in June of 2008 by roommates. Arias subsequently staged a robbery at her grandparents’ house, where she moved after the breakup, and reported a gun missing. The gun would later be confirmed to have been used in Alexander’s death.

Additionally, Arias was reported as contacting another ex to borrow gas cans, renting a car with what was reported as “kool-aid stains”, and attempting to destroy Alexander’s camera which included pictures of both of them as well as Alexander bleeding. Arias also was reported as having multiple wounds her self and wearing suspicious clothing.

Arias was confirmed as driving to Utah by credit card statements and her DNA was confirmed to be mixed with that of Alexander. Subsequently she was extradited back to Arizona and indicted by a grand jury.

Arias claimed self-defense and went on throughout the trial to tweet about domestic violence and suicidal thoughts of hers.

After today’s announcement of a first-degree murder charge, Aria could face the death penalty, life without parole, or a minimum of 25 years in prison based on, according to Arizona law, the cruel nature of the crime which is defined as the victim’s suffering and the murderer’s knowledge of that suffering.
