DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — A judge has set bond at $2,500 for Dolphins receiver Chad Johnson, who is being held in a Florida jail on a domestic violence charge after his wife accused him of head-butting her during an argument.

Johnson’s defense attorney, Adam Swickle, says Johnson posted the bond Sunday morning, though jail records show he had not yet been released. Swickle says a no-contact order has been issued that prevents Johnson from contacting his wife, Evelyn Lozada.

Such orders are common in domestic violence cases.

Swickle declined to comment further.

Evelyn Lozada has been released from the hospital and is staying with friends, according to TMZ.

The couple were driving home from dinner when Lozada confronted Johnson about a receipt she had found for a box of condoms.  The “Basketball Wives” star was treated at the scene for a “pretty good-sized” laceration after allegedly being headbutted by her husband, before being taken to the hospital, said Cpt. Dale Engle of the Davie, Florida Police Department.

Johnson, who recently signed with the Miami Dolphins playing wide receiver, claims they accidentally bumped heads.

NFL.com reports:

“We are aware of the situation and are in the process of gathering all of the relevant information,” a Dolphins spokesman said in a statement.

The receiver’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, had no comment about the arrest when reached by NFL.com and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Johnson had never been arrested during his 12-year NFL career. But according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, he was arrested in a domestic dispute during college.

Johnson remains in custody and won’t be eligible for release until a bail hearing is set, which could be as late as Monday, Engle said.

A neighbor witnessed the altercation and called police.

As previously reported by NewsOne, Chad and Evelyn were married on July 4 of this year. The date was reportedly selected by the absent-minded groom so he would never forget their anniversary.

Excited about the special day, Chad live-tweeted from the event:

Chad Johnson ‏@ochocinco: Here we go…. Proverbs 18:22… I love you guys… If I do it right the 1st time I won’t have to do it again… Turn up…

Evelyn Lozada ‏@EvelynLozada : Follow me @ochocinco before I make Eve delete her twitter, we will be tweeting simultaneously from the same account once the wedding ends…

The couple have been filming the much hyped reality show “Ev & Ocho,” which is scheduled to premiere September 3, 2012.
