What is Go Recycle?

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ (COG) annual Go Recycle campaign is an effort to empower and educate local residents to extend their recycling practices into the workplace.

What is Recycling?

Recycling refers to the process of sorting and collecting items that would otherwise be thrown in the trash and processing them into a form that can be used to make new products. Paper, aluminum, glass, and plastic bottles are among materials that not only can be recycled but, can be made from recyclable materials. Complete the loop by buying and using these recycled-content products.

Workplace Recycling Tips:

Go Recycle thanks listeners for recycling at home and encourages them to also recycle paper, cardboard, cans, and glass and plastic bottles when they are at work. Here are some tips for recycling in the workplace:

  • Businesses can save money by recycling more and producing less trash.
  • Establish an environmental policy or mission statement committing your company to recycling and preventing waste.
  • To reduce waste use double-sided copying and printing to save paper.
  • Use electronic files instead of paper forms.
  • Create a name or slogan for your recycling program.
  • This will help to promote the concept of recycling amongst employees.
  • Identify employees who are interested in recycling and create a “Green Team”.
  • Post lists of recyclable items and methods for proper disposal.
  • The majority of waste generated by office workers is paper – which is recyclable.
  • Consider placing recycling containers in each office instead of trash cans; put trash cans in centralized locations.
  • Make sure all recycling bins are properly labeled.
