(Washington, DC)  —  President Obama spoke at the dedication for the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington, DC today. The dedication was supposed to happen in late August, but it was delayed due to Hurricane Irene.

Other participants on Washington, DC’s National Mall will include Reverend Jesse Jackson, actress Cicely Tyson, and the Reverend Al Sharpton.

The memorial is dominated by two main features.  The Mountain of Despair is a massive boulder at the main entrance of the site.  It symbolizes the struggle for peace and equality.  Just beyond that is the Stone of Hope, which looks as if it were carved out of the Mountain of Despair.  The Stone of Hope has the likeness of Dr. King emerging from it.
