(Undated)  —  Maryland drivers could save more than 540 dollars on summer driving this year if their vehicles met higher clean-car standards.  A new report by the Environment Maryland Research and Policy Center says under a 60-mile-per-gallon standard, Americans would save 67-billion dollars this summer and consume 17-billion fewer gallons of gas.  University of Maryland professor David Kirsch tells the “Gazette” relying on the evolution of technology like combustible engines would make it difficult to reach the 60-mile standard.  However, a move toward electric cars would make that goal realistic.  Current federal regulations require that cars get about 35-miles-per-gallon by 2016, but the group is encouraging the Obama administration to require 60-miles-per-gallon by 2025.
