NEW YORK — Matthew Broderick and Anika Noni Rose announced the nominees for the 65th Annual Tony Awards at New York’s Lincoln Center today.
The predominantly African American cast of The Scottsboro Boys cleaned up with a total of 12 nominations. The musical based on the 1930s Alabama court case involving nine black men wrongfully convicted of raping a white woman closed in December of 2010 due to low ticket sales, but is campaigning for a return to Broadway after posthumous acclaim.
Sister Act also netted five nominations and The Motherf**er with the Hat, starring comedian Chris Rock, was given six nominations.
The 2011 Tony Awards will be held on Sunday, June 12 at the Beacon Theater in New York.
