Many took to social media to say farewell to Roy Hargrove, the smooth jazz trumpeter who bridged the gap between the bebop generation and contemporary hip-hop and R&B stylists. He died at a New York hospital on Friday at age 49.

The cause of death was cardiac arrest, with complications related to kidney disease, the Washington Post reported.

His resume included performances with jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, hip-hop artist Common and neo-soul singer Eryka Badu.

Hargrove was a two-time Grammy Award winner—first in 1998 for his Afro-Cuban album “Habana” and again in 2003 for his album “Directions in Music.”

Take a look at this sample of Hargrove performing in the studio for KNKX Public Radio.

“The Great Roy Hargrove. He is literally the one man horn section I hear in my head when I think about music. To watch him harmonize with himself stacking nine horn lines on mamouth 10 mins songs RARELY rewinding to figure out what he did,” Questlove posted on Instagram.
