14017Inside Media: Radio One Founder Cathy Hughes

Guest: Cathy Hughes

Date: Saturday, August 09, 2014 at 2:30 PM

Location: Knight TV Studio

Radio pioneer Cathy Hughes talks about her role as the founder of Radio One, the largest black-owned broadcast company in the United States. Radio One’s 50 stations reach markets serving 82 percent of the nation’s African American population.

Hughes bought WOL-AM in Washington, D.C., in 1980 and changed it from an all-music format to include talk radio. The radio station became the cornerstone of Radio One, which captures the black experience through its community-oriented programming, the cable network TV One and online news sites News One and The Urban Daily.

She is featured in the Newseum’s newest exhibit, “One Nation With News for All,” which tells the dramatic story of how immigrants and minorities used the power of the press to fight for their rights and shape the American experience.

The program is free with regular paid admission. Seating is on a space-available basis.
