Ex-Fugees star Wyclef Jean has been left off the list of approved candidates to participate in Haiti’s presidential election, Reuters reported Thursday, citing a member of the electoral board.

Jean, 37, was not in compliance with legal requirements to run in the November 28 election, according to the electoral board member.

Under Haitian law, presidential candidates must have spent the five years prior to the election living in Haiti.

Jean, who said he has received death threats over the past week, lives and works in the U.S.

The musician has said that his appointment as a roving ambassador by President Rene Preval in 2007 exempted him from the residency requirement.

The provisional electoral council is due to formally publish the list of approved candidates Friday.
